August 21, 1959, Hawaii was admitted as the 50th state of the United States of America by proclamation of President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Hawaii is known for its beautiful beaches, surfing, temperate climate, and friendly people. The landscape of Hawaii was forever changed on December 7, 1941 when an attack on Pearl Harbor by Japan brought the U.S. into World War II. The U.S.S. Arizona Memorial is the final resting place for 1,102 of the 1,177 sailors who died there during the attack on Pearl Harbor. The memorial was designed by architect Alfred Preis and consists of a floating structure that bridges the sunken U.S.S. Arizona.
