Ohio was admitted into the Union in 1803. Due to its location, Ohio became a pivotal area during the American Civil War. Ohio sent more soldiers to fight in the Civil War than any other state. The bloody battle of Shiloh took place there. Today, Ohio is home to some of the top-ranked companies in the country, including Proctor and Gamble, Goodyear Tire, and AK Steel. The architecture of the Ohio Historic District includes examples of Federal, Italianate, Greek Revival, and Queen Anne styles. Beautiful examples of late Victorian architecture in both businesses and homes exemplified the success and the increasing wealth of several Ohio residents and merchants.
