Texas is the second largest state in America in both area and population. Texas was a republic before it was annexed to the United States in 1845. The economy in Texas is based primarily on oil drilling and mining and also is a strong presence in the technology, finance, and construction industries. Some of the tallest skyscrapers in the country are located in Texas. One of the tallest is the J. P. Morgan Chase Tower, located in downtown Houston. It was designed by world famous architect I. M. Pei. It is the tallest building in Texas and the tallest five-sided building in the world.
