Career Outlook for Drafters
In the United States alone there are over 500,000 qualified drafters all working or looking for work. Even through such a tough economy and job decrease, drafters have still been able to get work through a contract or independently. Recent reports have stated that the job market for drafters with the right set of skills is set to increase over the next two years. Here is what you have to look forward to if you are currently studying drafting, or looking for drafting work.
The level of experience that you have will determine the amount of money that you will be able to earn each year. Those who have just completed a two-year drafting degree will either go out into the job field or they will seek further education for themselves. If you have the time and the money for more schooling, this is highly recommended. The amount of pay each year will increase when you have a higher degree.
A salary of $20,000 to $30,000 can be expected when you work an entry-level drafting job. After you work in the drafting field for more than two years, you will begin to see your increase. This of course is how it usually works in any job field that you specialize in. However, the entry-level job pay is also set to rise by the year 2012. This is actually when the career outlook for drafters is going to look up.
Along with the two years of mandatory experience, drafters also need to have extensive knowledge of CAD drafting software. This software has been designed to help drafters design plans a lot faster than they would writing them all out by hand. Of course drawing by hand is a skill that is required as well, but architectural design does use a lot more technology these days. Your CPU skills will also need to be improved so that you can create links and better title fonts through the use of effective and advanced technology.
Those who are in specialty drafting areas tend to have the ability to fill high-demand jobs. Again, this is where drafters who further their education and get better training have the better shot at higher-paying jobs. If you are looking for a salary that is well over $50,000 you need to have the education to back it up. Most employers in the drafting world look for applicants who hold a master’s degree or higher. A two-year associate’s degree will no longer give you as much as you might want in terms of pay and job advancement.
Those who have found an interest in the drafting career field are usually skilled with computers as well as CAD software. If you can get familiar with this program ahead of time, you will be a step above the rest. Rather than signing up at a community college, you might have better luck at a trade school. This is where you can get the training and skills needed to succeed in your chosen job field. Most trade schools have a specialized drafting and CAD program that will help to set you up for life.
