Drafting Specialties

As a drafter your main goal is to focus on the designs and creation of drawing plans that will help to explain the dimensions, materials needed, and how to get through the process to the final project.  Drawings that drafters create are usually meant to act as guidelines and from those guidelines, blueprints are formed.  Of course this is what every drafter in every drafting specialty will be responsible for. If you are already getting ready to get into the drafting world, you might want to take a look into different drafting specialties that you can choose from.

Through your drafting career, you will start to develop skills and knowledge that help to promote you.  Once you start out as a junior drafter, within a couple of years of hard work and polishing those learned skills, you can become the senior drafter.  During this time, you will have the chance to learn about the major drafting specialties.  These specialties include: Architectural, Mechanical, Civil, Electronic, and Electrical.  Learning about these 5 major specialties will help you decide which one is going to be right for you.

When you walk through a neighborhood or a large city and gasp at the site of beautiful structures, you might be perfect for Architectural Drafting.  These drafters will create designs and blueprints that will help to build a number of needed buildings.  You might create your own neighborhoods, shopping centers, or even large skyscrapers.  Public and commercial buildings will also need a set of plans that could come from your hand!

For all major mechanical equipment that is used in large production warehouses and plants today, a Mechanical Drafter is required.  As a Mechanical Drafter, you will sit down and design the plans for machines that might be used in government facilities.  You might also have the chance to help create mechanical equipment for a wide variety of special projects.  You will need to have a passion and a knack for building things with your hands or even taking things apart.  This helps you to be a lot more visual when you are designing these mechanical plans.

Civil Drafters are responsible for designing roads, bridges, dams, and even the sewage systems that lie beneath your city or neighborhood.  You will see the Civil Drafter on a variety of different construction sites.  Once the plans are created and the blueprints have been developed, the Civil Drafter needs to ensure that there are no further issues with the plans.  You might also create large topographic maps that will cover large areas of the country.

Electrical and Electronic Drafters do not always work together in the same drafting field.  An Electronic drafter will make the drawings that essentially create the layout as well as the schematics of certain electronic devices and the components to those devices.  An Electrical Drafter will create the diagrams for the wiring, including the schematics of electrical circuits that are used to repair specific electrical systems.  These circuits and wiring diagrams are often needed throughout power plants, large buildings, and even local communication centers.

As you can see, you do have options to choose from in terms of drafting specialties.  Take the time to get a glimpse into each one and determine which specialty you feel you would fit well into.  Each specialty does come with its own perks and benefits that you can easily reap.  Start the search today and get into the specialty that will set you up for life!
