NewSchool of Architecture & Design
In 1980 Richard Welsh founded NewSchool of Architectural Design in Chula Vista, California. In 1988 NewSchool moved from Chula Vista to its current location in downtown San Diego, California. NewSchool of Architectural Design is one of only a few fully accredited architectural schools on the West coast. NSAD is accredited by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools to award associate's degrees, bachelor's degrees, and master's degrees. The degree programs at NSAD are accredited by the National Architecture Accrediting Board.
NewSchool of Architectural Design bachelor's degree programs feature a well-rounded curriculum that requires courses to be taken in the disciplines of communication, logical reasoning, humanities, and social science. These lower division courses are typically taken within the first two years. Students can choose to begin their bachelor's degree program during any of the four semesters of fall, winter, spring, or summer. Each student is required to choose an area of concentration by the end of their second academic year.
One of the highlights of the school is the summer exploratory program. The summer program gives students the opportunity to work alongside accomplished architects and instructors for four consecutive weeks. During this time students are able to hone their area of interest and build their student portfolio with finished projects that will showcase their skills to potential employers. No previous coursework or knowledge in architecture is required. The four-week program is a great way for students or potential students to see if architecture is a good fit for them.
Along with the academic offerings at NSAD, there are several extracurricular opportunities. The school features architectural student clubs, student government, design clubs, and an urban bike club. Students can also start their own clubs with the permission of campus officials. There are also career services available for students to help them prepare for life after graduation.
