Where Do Drafters Work?

When looking into perusing a new career there are many aspects that need to be taken into consideration.  For example, people are often wondering where professional drafters work. 

After you have completed your certification and you have received your degree as a drafter, you will be ready to find a job.  Keep in mind that the first entry-level job you land will have many limitations set on you.  When fresh out of school you are considered to be a junior drafter, the bottom of the barrel so to speak.  You will need to work your way up and prove your skills.  For now, you will work under direct supervision with your boss.  Your work will need to be approved prior to being finalized and you will be responsible for all changes and mistakes made to your plans.

As you start to ease your way into your career as a drafter, you will move into a very comfortable setting.  Studies have proven that architectural drafters produce better work when they work within a very comfortable environment.  This is actually true with a lot of different jobs.  Your office will most likely be air conditioned or will have proper heat during the winter.  You might even be able to enjoy your own music if the senior drafter permits it.  When you are working in an environment that is calm and relaxing, you are going to find that it is much easier to produce quality work.  Some architectural design offices will even hire a chair massage therapist to come in and give the drafters a 15-minute massage.

You can expect to work standard 40-hour work weeks.  At times, when the workload is large you might be asked to work overtime.  Take advantage of this, as when you step up and take the overtime more often than most, you are likely to be put up for the next promotion a lot sooner.  You will also need to ensure that you take the time to revise all plans and blueprints, even if the office hours have already closed.  Remember, one mistake can halt all production of a building!

Besides working in an office, drafters also get the chance to work out in the construction field.  This of course is to make sure that the plans are correct and followed the way they were laid out.  You might have to take the plans back for some simple revisions while you are out there, so be prepared!  If you choose to go into your own business or simply outsource your services to companies, you will have the option of telecommuting.   This usually means that you will be able to work right from home.  Keep in mind, there will be instances where you will need to present and plan specific blueprints to the clients in person.  Simply dress professional and you will be ready to go!

You have a wide variety of places in which you can find yourself working as a drafter.   Upon completing your training, you will be able to start looking for the perfect job setting.  Start out slow and work your way up.  Often times a freelance drafter is actually a drafter that has been in the business for a few years.  You want to know and feel comfortable with your new skills so pick a position that will allow that!
